On June 11th, 2026, the Thomas L. Berkley Office (also known as the North Oakland Self-Sufficiency Office) became a hub of empowerment as Alameda County Social Services Agency’s Department of Workforce & Benefits Administration (WBA) hosted the 3rd Annual Women of Valor Resource Fair. The turnout was strong, parking challenges and all!

 

Women of Valor was founded by Lorena Ruiz, Career Development Specialist II, after a community survey revealed an alarming prevalence of domestic violence among local women. Now in its third year, the event’s mission remains clear: to help women recognize their own power to create change.

The impact was visible. Attendee Sally R. said attending made her more comfortable sharing her story. Attendee Dorothy B., a former foster youth, celebrated one year of sobriety and left with a new mentor, encouraging other women to take full advantage of the resources available.

 

Under the coordination of Career Development Specialists I, Ayana Edgerly and Odalys Simmons, the spirit of the day was captured simply: people appreciate being seen outside of obligation. For Ayana, organizing Women of Valor is a reminder of why county work matters.

The team is already looking forward. A 2027 4th annual event at Eastmont is in the works, with a long-term vision of bringing the 5th Annual to the Oakland Coliseum.
